What is Noopept?
Noopept is a synthetic compound developed in Russia as a nootropic with the aim of improving cognitive function, memory and neuroprotection. It is structurally similar to the racetams, but is effective at significantly lower doses. In laboratory models, it has shown the potential to influence glutamatergic neurotransmission and increase the expression of neurotrophic factors.
How Noopept works
The mechanism of action is attributed to the modulation of AMPA receptors, stimulation of the release of BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor) and NGF (nerve growth factor). This increases neuronal plasticity and promotes synaptogenesis. It also acts as an antioxidant and may reduce glutamate-induced excitotoxicity.
Effects studied
-
Memory improvement: Studies have shown an effect on information consolidation and recall.
-
Neuroprotection: Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects in nervous tissue.
-
Promoting neuronal growth: Increasing levels of NGF and BDNF in the brain.
-
Anti-anxiety: In some models, it has shown anxiolytic effects without sedation.
