What is Humanin?

Humanin is a short mitochondrial peptide (24 amino acids) that is naturally synthesized in the cell's mitochondria and then diffuses into the cytosol. Scientists are interested in its role in modulating metabolism, resistance to apoptosis, and reduction of oxidative stress. Experimental studies have shown its benefits in models of cardiometabolic and neurodegenerative diseases.

How does Humanin work?

Humanin interacts with cellular receptor systems (IGFBP-3, FPRL1), thereby reducing apoptosis, supporting insulin signaling and preventing mitochondrial damage. It acts against β-amyloid and lipid membrane oxidation, thereby contributing to cellular vitality and protection against degenerative processes.

Effects studied

  • Increase in insulin sensitivity and decrease in glycemia in diabetic models.
  • Neuroprotection against β-amyloid stress in cell cultures.
  • Reduction of oxidative stress in mitochondria.
  • Improvement of cardiometabolic function in animal studies.
  • Potential in the treatment of metabolic and neurodegenerative diseases.

Dosage in studies

The data presented below are based on preclinical and cellular models. They do not represent the recommended dosage for human use.

  • Dose: 1–10 µg/kg daily
  • Administration form: subcutaneous
  • Frequency: 1–2 times a day
  • Duration: 2–8 weeks

Dosage is based solely on laboratory studies. It is not intended for human use.

Possible side effects

  • No serious side effects in preclinical studies.
  • Mild fatigue or headaches in some subjects.
  • Lack of data from long-term human use.
